The Bird and the Flute

This Week —

To say that I'm a fan of Peter and the Wolf, by Prokofiev, is the understatement of the century. I. AM. OBSESSED. The Elf and I listen to this imaginative piece pretty much every day — I highly recommend it being woven into your kiddo’s musical repertoire. In case you missed my first newsletter, you can listen to it  here. Today we’ll build on the narrative and learn some tidbits about the flute, which represents the Bird in Peter and the Wolf. The Flute-Bird representation is the most spot-on of all the instrument/animal pairings—it’s one instrument that literally sounds like an animal!

Kick back with your kiddies and enjoy this playlist packed with upbeat flute pieces spanning Classical, Jazz, and Bossa Nova, then topped off with a touch of Venezuelan music performed by my great friend, flutist Marco Granados.

Fun Flute Facts —

The flute is one of the oldest instruments in the world. It requires more air than any other instrument, including the big ol’ tuba! Some flutes are held vertically (such as the pan-pipe or Japanese bamboo flute) while others are held horizontally (such as the concert flute). And if you’d like to buy a flute for your kiddo, here are a few options: a wooden recorder and a sweet pan flute.
