This Week —

I started playing violin at age 2.5. My parents' neighbor decided that I had a good ear and instructed my mom to take me to lessons. My mom dutifully did so and I fell in love for the first time. The violin is a very, very difficult instrument. Why? Two main reasons: each hand is doing something completely different 😵‍💫 and there is no guide as to where to place your fingers to play notes in tune. You know those little separating lines along the guitar’s neck? They tell you where to place your fingers to play the notes in tune. Not the violin tho! So while you’re learning, it constantly sounds out of tune or, as people like to say, like a screeching cat.

Listen to —

If you have been following us for a while, your kiddos are already familiar with a lot of the standard violin pieces; Mozart, Beethoven, Bach concertos, and sonatas. Now it's time to listen to the violin sounding completely different: full of swing, sass, and dazzling virtuosity. This playlist is chock-full of danceable violin pieces that will get you and your kiddos energized, excited, and laughing! This is a great one for a fun car ride, an afternoon of making an obstacle course or indulging in bubbly drinks in your backyard.

In the Know —

Would you like a little refresher on those standard violin pieces we’ve featured in other playlists? Well, that’s what we are here for! I recommend getting started with Vivaldi, the King of Strings because he wrote some of the most gorgeous music for violin and orchestra out there. Then follow it up with some of Beethoven's violin concertos and string quartets. Lastly, here is a little video explaining how the violin works that my Elf likes to watch.

Happy listening!
