Sleepy Music for Babies

This Week —

Let’s talk about how music can make family life a teeny bit easier.

When listened to regularly, music can actually help your child recognize specific songs as cues over time.

In other words, you can use music to get your kids to do the stuff you want them to do without having to ask them 87,000 times.

At our house, certain music serves as cues, helping the Elf and I with transitions and defining certain parts of our day. We have a playlist for breakfast time, lunch time, nap time, bath time and bedtime. We’re trying to nail down the take-the-diaper-off-your head-and get-dressed-time but have yet to succeed—I’ll keep you posted.

Listen To —

The music on this weeks’ playlist comes from the Renaissance period, circa 15th century. But FYI, people: you’ll find zero Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star here. Instead, you’ll listen to mellow pieces from Dowland, Corelli, and Rameau. It’s gentle, dreamy and the absolute perfect cue for bedtime. We utilize it constantly, within seconds of hearing the first song, the Elf runs off to his bedroom and asks for his jammies and bedtime stories.

Give it a spin —

Consistency is key with music cues, so use the same one every time. If you can, start when they are newborns—it will become such a strong tool that the music cue will work no matter where you are. For example, when my family is at a restaurant past his bedtime, all we have to do is put him in the stroller with this playlist, and he passes out without fuss—MAGIC!

So let the snooze fest commence and cuddle up with this week’s playlist. Happy sleeping!
